CAUSES OF FAILURE IN AGRIBUSINESS

Causes of Failure in Agribusiness
By
Blessing Akpan

Today I have a notch in my agropreneurial mind to talk about Business failure in Agriculture and it's value chain.

Why people fail in business generally.

Below are few points to note:

1. Lack of Vision (Why are you in business).
2. Lack of Business Model.
3. Lack of Finance.
4. Lack of innovation.
5. Lack of financial intelligence.
6.Poor Decision making ability.
7. Lack of focus.
8. Procrastination.
9. Lack of planning.

I will discuss each points one after the other,

As an agropreneur, our goal is to use the available resources and maximize it's potentials to achieve our set goal

1.  Lack of Vision

Why are you in business,
As a business person you must have seen a common need, or problem,  in your environment and saw the possible solution of that need/problem or better way of doing things.

This solution put together gave birth to your vision, which can be put in the form of a money making venture or humanitarian service (which I know all of here are for the money making Venture)

3 in every 5 Nigerians are hungry for food hence  farmers are in high demand

Those 2 that are not hungry have the power of money working for them,so they can buy food with ease, so in conclusion everybody need food to survive,  farmers are in luck

2. Lack of Business model

People talk about Business plan a lot,  but Business plan is mostly needed by Investors  , but a business model is a must have for the agropreneur as it helps  create a road map to the agropreneur's set goal  in a sustainable level by connecting all variables to work you you.

With a Business model the agropreneur can identify  the following at a glance :

1.Key customers
2.Value proposition
3.Key partners
4.Key activities
5.Key resources
6.Channels of reaching customers
7.Customer relationship
8.Cost structure
9.Revenue stream

This will help the agropreneur run his internal business affairs  on a daily basis to achieve his/her overall goal.

3.Lack of finance

Yes the elephant in the room.

Everyone keeps complaining about not having money to start a business.

Breaking news guys - Money follows value

If you don't have value to offer,  money will run far away from you

This takes you back to your business model  (Value proposition)  once  you something of value, people will want to partner with you to make it happen. Facebook started with an idea,  he didn't have money,  but he was able to get people who have money to partner with him and make his vision a reality, same with Henry Ford,  Steve Jobs, etc.

Lack of finance is not the problem, the problem is lack of value

4. Lack of innovation

What is innovation?  Innovation  is the merging of 2 separate things to birth something new.

Good example is our local farmers remain poor because they sell their farm produce raw (which is  cheap)  but processors add value to the raw farm produce an create a desired product for end users  who are willing to pay more (value addition is key -be creative)

Now we know that most of these local farmers are illiterates,  why  don't you use your education and exposure to create access to Market for them,  you just fused the local farmer energy an your education to create a service needed somewhere.

Use what you have and do something new

5. Lack of financial intelligence

Why a lot of people fall for ponzi schemes  is because they lack financial  intelligence and their untamed nature of the quick fix attitude rather than following laid down success principles

Financial intelligence is needed for success to occur in an individual's life,  knowing where to spend your hard earned money is vital to your success.

People forget how hard it was for them to acquire money and then let that money go without analyzing the value they will get for the services they are buying,

We have a management team that analyses every investment opportunity that people bring to our cooperative,  you want to know if it's a good deal or a bad deal,  we respect the b

ack breaking work time everyone undergo to earn money, so every investment brought on our table must be analysed properly to de-risk ourselves from undue financial loss.

6. Poor Decisions making ability.

Most agropreneurs jump at anything offered to them without understanding how it works,

As an agropreneur your business decisions determine your destiny

Your choice of where you get your seedlings, stems,  broilers etc matters

Poor - input =poor - output

7.Lack of Focus

As an agropreneur doing one thing at a time is important,  it reduces numbers of unfinished projects,  helps you measure your success,  and open up your eyes to further improvement.

It is very possible to be a jack of all trade and master of all,  the secret there is "timing"

Once you start a project ensure you focus on that project till the end ,then move to the next project.

I have been blessed to be called a serial entrepreneur  because I have mastered each business I venture into.

I am the M. D/CEO of World of marketing international Ltd,  Fullcare pharmaceutical Ltd, A Business model Consultant,
A local fabricator of agri-related equipment, a farmer of who  started with 14plots and now 5,000acres with the goal of setting up an Agro processing factory,

A registered  Red Cross First Aider (Supply First aid kits to farmers,  organizations and individuals) also
An insurance broker.

I did all of that one step at a time.

9.Procrastination

A lot of agropreneurs  keep procrastinating on their plans of being successful , the I will  do it tomorrow ailments keeps lingering from days to years,  yet nothing is done that will move you to your goal.

Do it afraid should be your watch word,  just make a move towards the right direction,  you will learn something new.

10. Lack of planning

Who amongst you will desire to build a house without sitting down to plan the cost?

Okay someone might say building a house is too far on my bucket list,

Who among you will embark on a journey from point A to B without planning his or her movement mentally, financially and time based?

If you don't plan your agribusiness journey you are setting yourself up to fail.

We hope these few points has touched base in your hearts, we wish you all a happy stay on our platform and we encourage you to join our cooperative and leverage on networks available for you to enable you achieve your personal goal in your agropreneurial journey.

Cheers!!!

THINGS YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE STARTING A FARM ANYWHERE IN NIGERIA.

THINGS YOU NEED TO DO BEFORE STARTING A FARM ANYWHERE IN NIGERIA.

Before engaging into any farming activity you have to be prepared because starting a farm requires so much more than the knowledge of how to grow crops. Am going to give you a step by step guide on how to start a farm in Nigeria.

1. RESEARCH:
Try and learn as much as possible about the practice of farming. There are a lot of  useful materials, ebooks, trainings, practical sessions and forums that can help you know a thing or two about farming and what it's all about.
If you know anyone doing farming you can also approach them and ask them for advice and guidance, this can really go a long way.

2. PLANNING:
You need to have a solid business plan at hand. Identify what you are good at and what you are not.
Survey the land that you own or want to buy and find out what kind of farming activity works well there. Take the farm soil to a credible soil test facility for testing to find out which crop is best suited for your land.
Many people intending Farmer in Nigeria tend to ignore soil testing and go straight to planting only to fail later and complain how farming is hard.

3. CAPITAL:
Its always good to start small if you don‘t have enough money for farming. Try and avoid debts because this will pull you down. I am not saying that getting a loan is bad but I wouldn't encourage you to start your agriculture endeavour with loan.
Its better to apply for grants from agricultural institutions or schemes if there is any in your state or borrow money from a family member or friend to jump-start your farm. Then you can expand it after you have gain expertise and experience with loan.

4. EQUIPMENT:
Before you start the actual farming process you should be prepared with all the necessary things you need. If  you want to get into horticulture you need to buy all the requirements i.e  seeds, fertilizer, herbicides, pesticides etc.  If  you want to start a livestock farm then you need to  buy good breeds of any animal you intend to rear from a reputable source, animal feeds etc.

CASTOR PLANT, THE AGRIC OIL BUSINESS. Complete Biz Plan.

The Complete Business Summary of Setting up a Castor Farm & Plant.
This profile envisages the establishment of a plant for the production of castor oil
with a capacity of 1,000 tonnes per annum.
The present demand for the proposed product is estimated at 1,250 tonnes per annum.
The demand is expected to reach at 2,947 tonnes by the year 2017 .
The plant will create employment opportunities for 27 persons.
The total investment requirement is estimated at Birr 6.66 million, out of which Birr
4.09 million is required for plant and machinery.
The project is financially viable with an internal rate of return (IRR) of 29 % and a net
present value (NPV) of Birr 5.82 million, discounted at 8.5 %.
II. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION AND APPLICATION
Castor oil is processed from castor beans. It has a distinct feature and a peculiar
composition that makes it very versatile when is used as a raw material. It has got
applications in hydraulic fluids, paints and varnishes, surfactant and in the production of
synthetic fibers and dibasic acids.
III. MARKET STUDY AND PLANT CAPACITY
A. MARKET STUDY
1. Past Supply and Present Demand
Castor oil has got wide application in hydraulic fluids, paints and vanishes, surfactant in
the production of synthetic fibres, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and dibasic acids.
Although it is an industrial raw material or intermediate input, the user industries in
Ethiopia are at low stage of development currently. However, due to the conducive
conditions created for investment a number of projects in the chemical sector are coming
up recently in various parts of the country. Therefore, its demand is expected to grow
with the growth of the manufacturing sector.
On the other hand, castor oil has a very wide demand in the international market
especially in countries where the user industries are developed. The market in Europe
alone ranges from 500,000 to 750,000 tonnes.
As there are no plants that produce castor oil in the country, the limited amount that is
required by the existing users is totally met through import (see Table 3.1).
Table 3.1
IMPORT OF CASTOR OIL
Year Volume (Tonnes)
1999 6.63
2000 8.45
2001 0.80
2002 12.08
2003 6.40
2004 5.83
2005 8.63
Source :- Compiled from Customs Authority.
As could be seen from Table 3.1 the imported quantity during the past seven years ranges
from 5.8 tonnes to 12.08 tonnes, except an exceptional figure for the year 2001 which is
0.8 tonnes. The annual average over the last seven years is about 7 tonnes
Since the domestic market is not attractive, currently the general recommendation for a
county like Ethiopia is to export a substantial amount of what is produced. As mentioned
earlier, there is no problem of demand in the international market. Hence, Ethiopia can
capture at least 1% of the European market which ranges from 5,000-7,500 tonnes per
annum. However, for the purpose of this new project only 25% of the potential market,
which is at minimum 1,250 tonnes, is estimated as the present effective demand.
2. Projected Demand
Due to the development of the castor oil user industries in Europe, the export market is
very wide. Therefore, the supply to the export market can be increased at a rate of 10%
annually. The demand projection made based on this assumption is presented in Table
3.2.
Table 3.2
POTENTIAL DEMAND FOR CASTOR OIL
Year Quantity (Tonnes)
2008 1,375
2009 1,512
2010 1,664
2011 1,830
2012 2,013
2013 2,214
2014 2,436
2015 2,679
2016 2,947
3. Pricing and Distribution
By considering the imported price of castor oil and subtracting costs of duty and
transportation, a factory gate price of Birr 9,000 per tonne is recommended.
The factory can get its market outlet through foreign agents or directly selling to bulk end
users in the international market.
B. PLANT CAPACITY AND PRODUCTION PROGRAMME
1. Plant Capacity
Based on the market study shown above, the potential demand of castor oil for the year
2008 will be 1375 tonnes, and this demand is projected to grow to 2679 tonnes by the
year 2015. For the purpose of this project, a plant capacity of 1,000 tonnes of castor oil
is proposed. The plant will operate single shift of 8 hours a day and for 300 days a year.
Production can be increased by operating the plant double shift for 16 hours a day or
three shift for 24 hours a day, if the market warrant.
2. Production Programme
Considering the time required for market penetration and skill development, the plant is
assumed to start production at 75% of its capacity in the first year, at 85% in the second
year, and finally reach at 100% in the third year and then after. Table 3.3 shows
production build-up programme.
Table 3.3

Total 1,787.50 2,082.50 2,450
IV. MATERIALS AND INPUTS
A. RAW AND AUXILIARY MATERIALS
The major raw material for producing castor oil is castor bean. This raw material can be
obtained partially from SNNP region, and the rest can be procured from neighbouring
regional states of the country.
Castor oil plant requires auxiliary materials such as sacks, metallic drums, and other
inputs. These materials can be procured both from local and foreign markets. Table 4.1
presents the details of raw and auxiliary materials including related annual expenditure.

2. Land, Building and Civil Works
Land area required for the plant is 1,000 m2
. Built-up area for factory and administrative
buildings, and others for general purpose will be 500 m2
. At a land lease value of Birr
1.0 per m2
, the total land lease value will be Birr 80,000. At a unit (per m2
) building cost
of Birr 1,500, the total cost of buildings, including cost of site preparation and
development will be Birr 750,000. Thus, the total cost of land, buildings and civil works
will be Birr 830,000.

TOMATO FARMING UPDATED & EASY TO PRACTICE BIZ PLAN

TOMATO FARMING UPDATED & EASY TO PRACTICE BIZ PLAN FOR BOTH PEASANT & LARGE SCALE FARMER.

Tomato farming is very simple.
Anyone can do it in any capacity, either in the backyard or in commercial quantity.

Growing tomato is much more rewarding than you could ever imagined.

Tomato can be grown round the year, especially in places like Kano where there is irrigation system specifically made for it.

In other places, it is best cultivated during the rainy season when water is adequately available to support germination.

It could also be raised in a green house with hydroponic system as the latest modern method of its cultivation.

Step 1:(Pick up The Best Species)– The improved yield specie is the best
choice for farmers, do not pick the local species. In this case, I will recommend the

Roma variety.
The Roma tomato known for it’s size and redness is a plum tomato very popular in the Nigerian markets.

This specie can be used both for canning and producing tomato paste.

It is also commonly found in supermarkets in some countries like the United States.

Roma tomatoes are also known as Italian tomatoes, it is also called Italian plum tomatoes.

What makes Roma specie very unique is it’s long shelf life, it’s hard back, and low water content which enables it to last longer after harvest.

A paint rubber of the seed cost about N4,500.

Step 2:(Prepare The Nursery)..– This can be done around March/April when the rain is just beginning in most parts of the country.

You can use your backyard for the nursery or any other piece of land that is suitable for it.

Tomatoes does very well in most soil types in Nigeria but better in a black loose loamy soil.

Prepare the ground by clearing the grasses and rubble, loosen the soil with hand trowel and hoes.

Remove the seeds from the tomatoes and spread it on the prepared soil.

You can cover it with dry grasses to prevent the loss of moisture from the soil and prevent birds, ants, fowls from eating off the tomato farming seeds.

Within 5-7days you will see it germinating.

Wait till about another five days before you remove the dry grasses to allow for proper growth.

Leave it for another one month before transplanting.

Step 3:(Transplant to The Garden/Farm)– The final journey will be moving it into the permanent farm where they would grow to maturity and production.

If your farm is too big that you can’t do the transplanting alone, hire laborers according to your need.

You need to be careful with the tender plants to avoid breaking it.

Transplant is best done with hands for better results.

Open the soil with piece of small wood, insert the seedling into the hole and cover it with lose soil.

Tomato plant is very tender and fragile, it is best transplanted the same day you uprooted it from the nursery to avoid dehydration and fatigue.

Step 4: (Weed and Apply Fertilizer) – After two months from transplant, it will be time for weeding.

Hire laborers to do the weeding while you supervise to ensure that your tomato plants are not damaged during the process of removing weeds.

After the first weed, it will be time to apply fertilizer to help replenish the soil nutrients taken by the weeds.

To grow successfully, tomatoes need nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, potash, calcium, and magnesium, along with other trace minerals.

It’s always best to have your soil tested to check for nutrient levels and pH level.

Use fertilizer that supply those vital nutrients – N-P-K ratio fertilizer can be very good for tomatoes.

Step 5: (Harvest Your Tomatoes)– Tomato is harvested in matches, the moment you starts harvesting, you’ll continue on weekly basis till the end of the season, usually it will keep producing till the dry season when the plant will die off due to the scorching heat.

The first harvest starts within three months after planting.

That means if you plant by April, you should be expecting your first harvest to start by June/July.

From then, it will continue till November/December.

Step 6 (Market Your Tomatoes)– It is important to prepare your marketing well ahead of harvesting.

Look for who or where to supply the product.

This is because, tomato is a perishable product unless you have built storage system.

Mile 12 is the major market for fresh tomatoes and other vegetables in Lagos.

Its purely dominated by the Northerners who majors in this farming, harvesting cash over the years.

Why? 90% of vegetables consumed in Lagos are brought in from the North.

Virtually nothing is produced in the South West, South East and South South.

Lagos alone has over 15,000,000 million people consuming tomatoes almost on daily basis.

So, you can see the potential in the farming business.

There is need for smart entrepreneurs to see the opportunity for big business and big money in this sector.

We have gotten to the point where we need young savvy entrepreneurs to break into this sector and start producing and delivering quality, hygienic tomatoes at very affordable price.

The mass market remains the key to success in Agribusiness and I would rather sell 1,000 basket a day for N2,000 each than sell just 100 basket a day for N5,000 per basket. The money is in the mass market and we need to start seeing it that way and working that way. Produce more, sell less amount, and make more money.

If you start preparation now for this venture, you will harvest cash all season.

MAIZE FARMING, THE EASIEST & CHEPAPEST TO CULTIVATE WITH HIGH YIELD

Maize Farming in Nigeria
maize farming in nigeria
Research has it that over 800 million tonnes of maize is produced each year in the world with Africa atoning for only 6.5% (52000000) of that figure. Nigeria tops in Africa with a total production of 8,000,000 million tonne per year, so that means the market is still open for aspiring farmers to boost our nation’s production of maize.
Maize grows well under a temperature of 26 C-30 C with rainfall of between 75cm – 150cm per annum and in a well-drained sandy loamy soil of pH 6-7. In Nigeria maize can grow in almost every part of the country but the major producing states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Sokoto, Kebbi, Nassarawa, FCT, Niger and Zamfara.
Benefits of Maize Farming in Nigeria
  • Increased food to combat food insecurity
  • It can be sold to get money
  • It can be used for animal feeds
  • Raw materials for industries. Buyers include nestle, Kellogg and Nigerian Breweries
How to start Maize farming in Nigeria
Climatic and soil Requirements
Maize requires a temperature between 26 C – 30 C, rainfall between 75cm – 150cm per annum and a well-drained sandy loamy of pH6-7.
Land Preparation
Prepare the land by clearing the bushes in the land with a cutlass, making heaps or ridges manually with a hoe or mechanically by ploughing, harrowing and ridging.
Choose from Varieties/Cultivars
Choose from varieties or cultivars. The varieties/cultivars of maize include; dent maize, flint corn, popcorn, sweet corn and pod corn.
Planting of Maize
The Maize seed can be planted manually using a stick or cutlass, or mechanically using a planter. Early maize is planted between March/April and late Maize is planted between July/August. However planting maize either early or late also depends on the location and rainfall.
The quantity of seed needed to plant on a hectare of land is 25kg-30kg, two to three seeds are also recommended per hole. Although the quantity of the seeds used depends on spacing or plant population.
For spacing 90cm by 30cm at one seed per hole or 75cm by 25cm at two seeds per hole is recommended. Planting can be done manually using Cutlass or mechanically using planters. Dig 2-4cm deep and put two or three seeds per hole. After four to seven days germination should begin to occur.
Other practices for a healthy maize farm
  • Replanting of seeds to replace the seeds that did not germinate
  • Removal of weak plants from a stand to give rise to one or two vigorous crop plants.
  • Apply NPK 15:15:15 (200kg/Ha, four bags) at planting, also apply 250kg (5 bags) or 150kg (3 bags) of urea per hectare, five to six weeks after planting. Farmland manure, dropping s from the poultry/organic manure can also be applied.
  • Weeding; this is done three to four times at regular intervals. It can be done manually using hoe or chemically by the use of specified herbicides.
  • Control of pests and diseases; it can be done anytime at regular intervals or by preventing it completely using appropriate chemicals.
Harvesting
Maize also known as corn can be harvested by hand, sickle or corn picker by combined harvester. Maize matures 90-120 days after planting. It is harvested by plucking the cobs or using machines.
Storage
Maize can be stored in a fireplace, cribs or silos.

How to Make Compost from Kitchen and Garden Waste?

How to Make Compost from Kitchen and Garden Waste?

Making Fertilizer Is A Basic And Brisk Process That Enables You To Make Expansive Sum Composts In A Limited Ability To Focus Time.  Composting Is A Characteristic Reusing Procedure Of The Kitchen Compost Which Is Normally The Blend Of Plants, Leaves Or Any Mix Of Organic Material That Can Be Changed Over Into Organic Manure With The Assistance Of Smaller Scale Life Forms.
Following Items Are Required To Create Compost:
Kitchen Waste
Saw Dust
Compost Bin
Garden Waste
Animal Manure
A Garden Fork

Step 1 – Collect Kitchen Waste

Pick The Correct Nourishment Items You Are Discarding For Making Compost.  Peelings From Leafy Foods, Nuts, Egg Shells And Over-Matured Natural Product Regard Make Compost And Maintain A Strategic Distance From Oils, Drain Items And Greasy Meats.

Step 2 – Collect Garden Waste

Collect All Leaves And Clippings From Any Gardening Work You Do And Add To The Compost Mix Over A Period Of Time For Ideal Effect.

Step 3 – Other Materials to Include

Add Sawdust And Livestock Manure To Compost Pile.

Step 4 – Create Compost

Blend All Your Fertilizer Materials Into A Manure Receptacle. The Canister Ought To Be Marginally Raised From The Floor And Ought To Have A Handle With Which You Can Swing To Pivot The Receptacle. Turn The Container Twice Every Day That Enables The Fertilizer To Combine And Consolidate Normal Advantages To Make An Extremely Effective Organic Manure. Guarantee The Canister Has Two Or Three Openings Down The Side To Enable Dampness To Escape As The Container Is Turned.

Step 5 – Spread

Once Your Compost Has Turned Into A Dark And Soil-Like Mixture, It Is Ready.  Use Garden Fork To Fertilize And Allow The Compost Layer To Seep In And Take Effect Before You Fork On Another Load..

SMALLHOLDERS STEP-BY-STEP SERIES
SNAIL FARMING AS AN ENTERPRISE
TRAINING PAMPHLET
DEVELOPED BY THE
VERSION 1
REGULARLY UPDATED
FORWARD

Nigeria has great potential to become an agricultural powerhouse. 70% of our great
landmass is suitable for agriculture, yet only 30% of the land is currently used for
cultivation. Nigeria’s diverse climate, from the tropical areas in the South to arid zones in
the North, allow the cultivation of virtually all agricultural products grown in the tropical
and semitropical regions of the world. There is thus abundant opportunity for growth and
expansion.
The agricultural sector contributes 70% of labor force, 80% of consumed food, but only
40% of gross domestic product (GDP). 90% of agricultural production is produced by
smallholders with the average farm size in the South reaching about 0.5ha and in the North
4ha. Subsistence smallholder farming thus continues to dominate the sector.
Snail farming as an enterprise is one of the numerous approaches which will successfully
transform Nigeria’s subsistence agriculture.
This training pamphlet which is part of our “easy to read and understand” Smallholders
Step-by-Step Series is to:
 Equip farmers with “quick-win” skills to keep high quality snail,
 Equip farmers with “quick-win” financial skills to generate profit from snail farms,
 Encourage non-farmers to establish viable snail farms easily.
I will like to acknowledge the immense contribution of Mr. Chukwudi Precious, The
Programs Officer of The Smallholders Foundation, Future Farmers Program. Chukwudi’s
focus is on re-engaging smallholder farmers to gradually move up the ladder from
subsistence agriculture to a more commercial agriculture.
Nnaemeka C. Ikegwuonu,
Executive Director,
The Smallholders Foundation,
Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.
Snails normally found in Nigeria belong to the group called pulmonata gastropod (respire
using lung) and the family of animals known as Mollusca. They are hermaphrodites i.e.
male and female reproductive organ both in one body, so one cannot really distinguish
between the male and female specie.
Snails are very sluggish in movement and due to this attribute it has traditionally been a
symbol of laziness. Snails are usually found in the forest or bush areas and are very active
at night. They contain high percentage of protein (12-16%) and irons (45-50 mg/kg) they
are low in fat and also contain almost all the amino acids needed by humans. Snail meat has
a high medicinal value known to control hypertension and its blue liquid is used in
stopping excessive bleeding from open wounds.
Helticulture (Snail farming) is as easy as ABCD because snails never fall sick, does not
require you to buy food and does not require a lot of money to build them a pen. The only
thing the rearing of snail requires is your attention and care. Snails reproduce rapidly. They
are capable of producing 100 eggs and with the discovery of the Achatina Achatina, very
high prolific specie of snail which can lay up to 1,000,000 eggs, snail farming is indeed a
profitable business.
Species of snails found in Nigeria are:
 Zebra Nerite snail
 Tracked Nerite snail
 Horned Nerite snail
 Sulawesi snail
 Pond snail
 Apple snail
The Achatina achatina, Achatina fulica, Archachatina magenata all belong in the family of
Achatinidae a diverse group of large pulmonat land snails, originally from western, eastern,
and South Africa with long slender shells. In Nigeria they are mostly found in southeast and
Niger delta region. Their size ranges from 3cm to 25cm. They mostly live in jungles in
tropical countries, but some may live in grassland. They primarily feed on fruits and leaves.
They are easy to find and not difficult to rear. They lay several batches of eggs each year.
Generally, they are quite easy to care for, being able to put up with a range of conditions.
Advantages of snail farming
 Every part of the snail is vital in food, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and fishing
industry.
 Snail farming requires a very little amount of capital and running cost is low.
 Snail farming is very conducive as no odour, stress, noise and irritation is involved.
 Profit generated in snail farming is far higher than one gained in livestock farming.
 Snail farming accumulates less loss and damages.
 It is compatible with other work responsibilities,
Steps in snail farming
Site Selection - Select lands that are plain with adequate shade. It should be homestead
enterprise, on soil that is not waterlogged. Humus soil is recommended.
Step 1: Select land that has humus soil and flat
Housing: Use intensive system of rearing. It can be high or low fenced pen, tank pens,
baskets, drums, trampolines. In the construction of high fenced pen the walls should be a
dwarf wall with bricks 1m high built all around it and with wire gauze at the top. Dig a
trench all-round the bottom of the fence and pour used engine oil to protect it from
intruding insects. The same technique is used in low fenced pen. One can as well rear snails
in his/her farm, it involves planting or bringing in snails loving plants such as plantain,
banana, pawpaw and cocoyam. After attracting them you fence the farm dig trench round
the bottom and pour engine oil in it to avoid intruding ants.
The intensive system is good for snail farming
Step 2: Use intensive system with trench round the bottom of the fence
Breeding and Health Management - Snails start laying eggs between 8-12 months when it is
sexually mature. They lay eggs in the floor 2-4cm deep. Incubation period varies from 24-
35 days. After hatching the baby snail stays in the soil for 2-5 days. The baby snails should
separated from the adult in another room in the pen.
The baby snail stays in the soil for 2-5 days, please separate from the adults.
Step 6: Separate the baby snail from the adult and clean the pen.
