PRACTICAL GUIDES ON RICE FARMING

AGROPRENEUR HUB PRACTICAL LECTURE ON RICE FARMING

Our decision to discuss Rice today is premised upon several enquiries on this. And if those who have been asking us about Rice are in the house, kindly make sure you follow this short lectures.

After Oil and Gas industry – Agriculture in Nigeria is the second most profitable branch of business in Nigeria, and I'm not sure it'll be that way for long. That said, it is worthy of note that Rice is one of the most popular products in Nigeria! It's inseparable part of the diet for almost every Nigeria. Nigerian citizens consume around six million tons of rice every year. Around 70% of this rice quantity is locally produced. Local production is unable to satisfy a high demand for rice, so the Nigerian Government is forced to import around 1.8 million tons of rice every year and spends around 365 billion Naira. It means that the business opportunities for rice production in Nigeria are endless. Local production can`t satisfy even local demands of the market. So, even if you concentrate your attention only on the local market you still will be in a win-win situation.

Yes! 1.8 million metric tons of rice is where your opportunity lie. The question now is how much can you do? If we all do a little, we'll all do much. And by so, we would have stopped the exportation of our monies to Thailand

This is what Rice looks like when in the field.

This is just before harvest.
I'm sure most of us have only seen it when processed like this

1. Business Plan

No business can be started without a proper business plan. This plan will also be your guidance for your own rice farming in Nigeria. You should think carefully about many things before you take some action. Any professional business plan should include: Capital investments – how much money you need and where you get this money! Client base – where you can find clients for your business! Site and location of your farm. Type of rice you want to cultivate. Equipment for rice farming. Employees, Distributors, Partners, Goals for the first years, and Innovations: what are you doing differently.

2. Capital in Rice Farming

Rice farming in Nigeria is a capital intensive business cost nearly about N144,000 to cultivate an acre. Of course, this is in the case where you're using the best practises and are working with the most suitable soil type. And this is why we encourage farmers at Agropreneuer to always think of partnership in your agribusinesses, and this is especially so with Rice. Even if you don't want to share your profit with others - think about sharing the challenges of the market. Consider Clustered farming. In the Agricultural business, you can't expect high profits without major investments. You can also look for an angel investor who also works in the business. If you manage to create a successful business plan, where you have included all variables of the market, then you may ask for a loan in a bank.

This leads to the subject of choosing the right land.

3. Land Choice

Rice is one of the cultures that prefers a swampy land with high water holding capacity. Choice of land really matters in the rice production in Nigeria. Rice farmers in Nigeria prefer to select ecological zones, traditional rice cultivating states, lands with high water capacity or swampy lands. Moreover, a good rice farmer also analyzes soil before starting the planting process. It means that you may need to survey thoroughly for a land you want to take. Remember, that the first harvest will show your business direction.

4. Land Preparations

Like anywhere else in the world, Rice cultivation in Nigeria demands land preparation. The climate conditions give you a possibility to prepare your land for rice production from November to February. It's dry season in Nigeria, so you should prepare your land before raining season comes. Remove bushes and other weeds that can`t help your rice to grow. You can also apply fertilizer for better rice production. Fertilizers should be only organic and applied in right quantities. You may also consult an agriculture specialist for the matter of fertilizers.

5. Choose the Rice that is most Suitable for your State.

Nigeria is one of the biggest rice exporter countries in the world. Still, in the same time, it`s a country with the highest demand of rice in Africa. Every State in the country has chosen an optimal variety of rice according to the soil and weather conditions. Take a close look at top 8 states with rice farming preferences and their choice of rice!

Ekiti State – Igbemo Rice
Nasarawa State – Olam Rice
Ebonyi State – Ebonyi Rice
Niger State – Mama Happy Rice
Kano State – UMZA Rice
Ogun State – Ofada Rice
Anambra State – Anambra Rice
Kebbi State - Labana Rice

Is your State on the list? If not, don't worry. That's where partnership comes in. Of course, we are aware of Rice being grown in Zamfara, Kaduna, etc. but these 8 are the most suitable location for Rice farming in Nigeria. Take note.

6. Choose your Rice seed wisely

The healthier rice seeds you get, the better yield you achieve from its further selling. You should choose an improved variety of rice according to your cultivation environment. If you are about to start your rice farming business in Nigeria, then you need your money not spent in vain. The first harvest can show your future potential in the business. Try to buy seeds from a company licensed by The National Agricultural Seeds Council.

If you chose high-quality seeds you might get other bonuses, like:

Decrease weed problems.
Improve yield by 10-20%.
Increase rice resistance to pest attacks and diseases.
Improve germination by more than 50%.
Produce consistent rice seeds size.

Most times, the problem with most poor yielding farms, is poor seed.

7. Method of Planting

You may choose from two variants of rice planting. You can either practice direct seeding or use the nursery then transplant it to the farm.

If you have chosen direct seeding, then you can perform this process by dibbing or broadcasting. Start the farming process by dividing your land by the field spots of 50-100 square meter each and construct small bunds. The seeding rate for dibbling is 60 kg/ha, for broadcasting is 80 kg/ha. The major problem for this method is weeds. Use herbicides to illuminate them.

Nursery Rising requires you to put seeds placed in gunny bags into the water for 24 hours. After soaking – put the gunny bags into shades. Sprinkle water over seeds and turn bags from side to side at least three times a day. After 36-48 hours, the seeds sprout. The seeds are ready for nursery field. Construct drainage canals for proper water removal. Also, apply fertilizers if necessary. After 21 days in the nursing, you can place the seeds into the field.

8. Weed & Pest Control

Weed control is essential for rice cultivation in Nigeria. In fact, it is compulsory. You should apply the first weeding within 2-3 weeks after appearance, use a cutlass for that. The second weeding is needed to be done within 6-7 weeks after the appearance.

The most problems for rice cultivating come from armyworms, termites, rodent and birds.

Birds can be easily removed manually if you hire people to scare them 6 am to 7 pm. You can also try to place a scarecrow in the field.

For rodent control, you can place snap traps in the field.

Termites can be killed by spraying Nogos 50 combining with water at the rate of 30 ml per one gallon.

Armyworms can be killed with Carbaryl or Gammalin 20 mixed with water at the rate of 1.7 kg in 230 liters per one hectare.

9. Harvest and after harvest process

Remember that the best time for rice planting is in mid-March to mid-April. The rice plants are ready for harvesting after three-four months of planting. Your rice is ready for harvesting when the plant changes its color from green to brown. After the harvest, the rice should go through certain processes before ready for final consumption.

Sun Dry the Rice – you need to dry the rice seeds, so you could easily separate the hull from the grain. Try to place rice open to the sun and keep it sundry for three-four days until dry up the moisture.

Hulling – it's a process of separating the hull from grains. You need a blowing or hulling machine to make the process easier.

Parboiling. This process is required before packaging the rice so that it would be ready for distribution.

Packaging. You can package the rice into your exquisite branded sacks, or you can also ask your contractor to brand the rice. The branded sacks should contain the name, location, your farm address and mobile number, so your customers could contact you.

Simple right?

And finally,....

10. Selling your Rice

Even before you start rice farming in Nigeria – you need to think about buyers. Before you even start, you may need a list of few buyers who would like your rice ready. You can also contact them when your rice is ready for distribution. Do not hesitate to contract local restaurants and fast-food chains about your rice supply.

Entering into a bidding agreement with end-users such as the ones mentioned above can help you solve the market issues.

Here are the Benefits of Rice Farming in Nigeria....

The high demand for the rice. Every household in Nigeria consumes rice and the demand for this product will only grow up high!

Yields early. Many crops need from six months to one year to be ready for harvest. At the same time, rice needs only four-five months to be ready.

High yield. You can expect at least 100 bags of rice from an acre of land.

You do not need to be an expert in the rice farming in Nigeria to start this business. With the right information and guidance such as you can find on platforms such as ours, anyone can indulge in Rice farming.

High return on investments and market stability.

Major Challenges

Getting the right variety. If you are a new in the rice farming business in Nigeria, then you need to get your attention on the right variety of rice, or you can lose your venture. This is very crucial. Take it lightly at your own risk. Being a registered member of Agrotrending, we can help you source the right seed, depending on your location.

Disease
Rice farming in Nigeria can include potential diseases for your rice. Consult experts to illuminate the basis for the diseases. Like any other crop, research institites like IITA have been instrumental to the development of disease resistant seed-types in Nigera. Also, you can always stick with a consultant from start to finish. Alternatively, you can join a Clustered Rice Project this year at Agropreneur to gain some experience on the does and donts in Rice Farming.

Birds. The greatest threat to every crops or grain business in Nigeria!

Importation of rice. Foreign rice is cheaper than local, so you might need to work harder so people would buy your rice. And with improved seeds, large area farming and mechanization, the cost of Rice farming can drop greatly.

If you had enough resources, would you start rice farming in Nigeria?

FROM THE ABOVE LECUTRES, it is clear that Rice Farming can be a great source of revenue for anyone going into it, whether as an investor farmer or a native farmer.

The watermelon is an annual plant that has a prostrate or climbing habit. Stems are up to 3 m long and new growth has yellow or brown hairs. Leaves are 60 to 200 mm long and 40 to 150 mm wide. These usually have three lobes which are lobed or doubly lobed. Plants have both male and female flowers on 40-mm-long hairy stalks. These are yellow, and greenish on the back.
The watermelon has many benefits, which are your selling points
Some benefits to consumers
Asthma: The powerful anti-oxidant in watermelon reduces toxic matters in the body, that in turn reduces asthma attacks.

Arthritis: The rich beta-carotene and vitamin C content in this big fruit do wonders in quenching inflammation that contributes to conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Bladder problems:  Its cleansing and natural diuretic effect is totally healing for kidney and bladder problems

Cholesterol:  Watermelon juice is healthful in preventing cholesterol from clogging arteries and can increase HDL, the good cholesterol, reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases.

Constipation: Drink a big glass of watermelon juice. It is very effective in aiding the elimination of wastes. Consuming plenty of this red juice will do a lot of good.

Fluid retention:  Its diuretic action helps to eliminate excess fluids from the body, reducing water retention, especially for women during their monthly menstruation cycle and in pregnant women.
Heart attack: The combination of folate and the other essential vitamins in this fruit plays an important role in reducing the risks of heart attacks, strokes and colon cancer.

Itchiness: As watermelon juice cleanses the body of toxic wastes, it also greatly reduces itchiness that result from toxicity of acidosis.

PALM OIL BUSINESS

Palm oil is native to West Africa. Nigeria used to be the world's largest producer of oil palm before the oil boom era, but Malaysia has now taken the leading position. Oil palm plantation and allied industries is now the main stay of the Malaysian economy. The palm tree can be used in various ways: the leaves are used in making brooms and for roofing materials (in the rural areas). The bark of the fond can be peeled and woven into baskets, the main trunk can be split like sawn timbers and used as part of building materials, while palm wine can also be obtained from the palm tree, as well as red palm oil, which is readily obtainable from the fresh fruit bunches.
When the fruit is processed, however, the residue obtained can be used as fuel (for cooking and fertilizer to improve soil nutrient).
Red palm oil is used in cooking, making soap, candle and margarine. Palm kernel oil can be extracted from the nut, while the residue obtainable in the process of palm kernel oil extraction, otherwise called palm kernel cake, is used as livestock feed.
Palm kernel oil is used in vegetable oil and soap making, and the shells are useful as energy source. The uses to which oil palm can be made seem non-exhaustive. This clearly indicates that investment made in the establishment of oil palm plantation is nothing but a wise one.
The market is guaranteed for all the products of oil palm plantation in this era of global food crisis.
Technical Information
To establish palm oil plantation, involves getting a good site where rich, well-drained acidic soils are abundant. The soil should have adequate quantities of potassium, magnesium and nitrogen. Soil tests should therefore be carried out to determine the nutrient status of the land. It is usually better to use the early maturing variety called 'tenera,' which bears fruits as from the fourth year.
Other requirements include seedlings procurement, which can be obtained from reputable nurseries. Prospective investors must engage the services of agricultural experts in the course of establishing this project.
Other cultural practices are planting, regular weeding, pruning and fertilizer application.
Financial Aspect
We are recommending 50 hectares for a start. 20 hectares oil palm plantation can conveniently service a palm oil mill that will be established by the owner when the plantation starts to bring fruit. To establish 50 hectares of plantation, the sum of N10, 500,000 will be required and this is broken down as follows:
Pre-investments: N300, 000
Land acquisition: N4, 000,000
Land clearing/preparation: N3, 000,000
Seedlings procurement: 120/ha(2400 @ N500): N1, 200,000
Other cultural practices @N100, 000/ha: N2, 000,000
Total N10, 500,000
Income Analysis
A mature plantation will start to give an investor five tons of red palm oil annually from the fourth year per hectare. 100 metric tons of oil can be obtained annually from 20 hectares of plantation.
A ton of red palm oil is a minimum of N150, 000, while gross revenue of N15 million is obtained from red palm oil.
We can also get three metric tons of palm kernels per hectare, which gives us 60 tons from 20 hectares. This translates to annual income of N4.2 million. Total income realisable is about N19.2 million, while the annual operating expense is put at N5.8 million.
This leaves us with net income of N13.4 million annually for the investor for the rest of his/her life. Serious-minded investors can be assisted in realising this worthwhile investment.

MAIZE UPDATED BUSINESS PLAN

MAIZE BUSINESS PLAN ANALYSIS

Corn
General Information
Corn (Zea mays) has been grown in the
northeast for generations, and is a demanding
crop but one that is highly-valued for its use
as animal feed, silage, and as a grain for
human consumption. Corn’s energy
production per acre is higher than any other
crop, and it is a durable grain that is relatively
easy to process.
There are a few different types of corn. Flint
(or Indian), silage, flour, sweet, pop, and
ornamental varieties exist, but flint and flour
corn are the types most commonly grown for
human consumption in the northeast.
Popcorn is relatively simple to grow,
germinating and growing more quickly than
other varieties, but is difficult to properly
process.
Preparation & Planting
Corn requires a high level of nitrogen in order to do well, and will grow well in well-drained
loam with a pH of between 5.6 and 7.5. To prepare the seed-bed, chisel-plow a sod field in the
fall and apply manure if needed, then till the seedbed 2-3 times before planting in late spring.
Pulverizing the spring soil as soon as it dries out will build up a mulch layer and prevent the soil
from becoming too hard to plant into. Corn can be planted after a cereal or legume crop if
nitrogen levels are high enough, but should be cultivated with enough time before planting to
eliminate annual weeds.
If corn is planted later than mid-May, yields generally decrease. However, planting too early (in
soil temperatures lower than 60°F) may lead to slow corn emergence and greater weed
competition. Growers are advised to use desired plant density (24,000-26,000 plants per acre) to
calculate their seeding rate, which should ideally be about 10% higher than the plant density.
(Use the following calculation if germination rates or low seed weights are a concern.) Very
high seeding rates can lead to lodging once ears have formed.
